Hair, Healing, and Awareness: Why Scalp Health Matters
May is Melanoma Awareness Month. And while most of the conversation is around skin, there’s one area that doesn’t get talked about enough. Your scalp. At Kerotin, we spend a lot of time talking about hair growth and hair loss. But healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. And your scalp is skin, too! It needs care, attention, and protection just like the rest of your body.
What is melanoma?
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that develops from pigment cells in the skin. It’s often linked to UV exposure and can show up anywhere on the body, including the scalp. Because your scalp is covered by hair, it’s easy to miss changes. That’s why awareness is so important.
Why your scalp health gets overlooked
Most of us are used to protecting our face and body from the sun. The scalp is usually an afterthought. Areas like your part line, hairline, or thinning spots are often exposed more than we realize. Over time, that exposure adds up.Taking care of your scalp is part of caring for your hair overall. It’s the foundation for stronger, healthier growth over time.

Additional Signs to Watch For
-
A new or changing mole
-
Itching, tenderness, or bleeding
-
A spot that looks different from others (“ugly duckling”)
-
A sore that doesn’t heal
Noticing the changes in your hair and scalp
Your hair and scalp can tell you a lot. Small changes like dryness, sensitivity, or new spots are worth paying attention to. Thinning hair can also mean less protection from the sun, which makes scalp care even more important over time. This isn’t about fear. It’s about being aware and checking in with your body.
Simple ways to support your scalp
You don’t need to change everything overnight. Small, consistent steps can go a long way.
-
Be mindful of sun exposure, especially along your part
-
Wear a hat when you’re in direct sunlight
-
Check your scalp regularly or ask your stylist to take a look
-
Pay attention to anything new or changing
-
Use products that help support and protect your scalp
We’ve also formulated a few products with added support in mind. Our Snail Mucin Serum and Curl Refresher both offer UV protection, giving your scalp extra care when it needs it.
Awareness looks like showing up for yourself
One of the women in our community, Katie, shared her experience with stage IV melanoma and how it impacted her hair journey. After starting immunotherapy, she lost her hair. When it began to grow back, it felt different. Thinner, weaker, and harder to manage. Like many, she tried everything, hoping something would help, but nothing seemed to work. It took a toll on her confidence during an already difficult time. Hair can feel deeply personal, especially when you’re trying to rebuild after loss. Over time, Katie found a routine that supported her hair again. She started to notice more strength, more growth, and a sense that her hair was responding again. Years later, that consistency is still part of her routine. Her story is a reminder that progress takes time, and small, steady steps can help you feel like yourself again.
Moving forward, together
Hair health is a journey. And so is taking care of your scalp. If this is something you’ve never thought about before, that’s okay. What matters is starting now, one small step at a time.
